Paul Herrera for Jr. Vice Commander-in-Chief

Building Unity Through Choice

This year, our organization finds itself at a pivotal moment. In the most recent national election, a Comrade stood up from the floor and won against the presumed candidate for Senior Vice Commander-in-Chief. That moment reminded us that the voice of our membership matters, and it also brought new energy and some division into the Western Conference, the place I am proud to call home.

Now, the Western Conference has the responsibility of putting forward a new Comrade for Junior Vice Commander-in-Chief from the Western Conference. For the first time in many years, we have five candidates stepping forward, myself included. In just a short time, we will gather in Idaho for a Town Hall where each of us, as part of the regular Western Conference mid-year conference, will have the chance to share our vision, answer questions, and listen to you, the membership.

Not Running Against, But Running For

I want to be clear about something: I am not running against anyone. I am running for the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Every one of my fellow candidates is a good Comrade with a vision for how to make this organization stronger. We may not all share the same ideas on how to get there, but that is the strength of the VFW: we bring our different experiences to the table, and together we work to move forward.

My campaign is built on the belief that the VFW must always remain transparent, accountable, and focused on service. I believe in empowering members, respecting traditions, and building bridges across generations. My slogan, “Be Bold. Be Courageous. Be VFW,” is not just words; it is a reminder that this election is about where you believe we should go as an organization.

Respect for My Fellow Candidates

I encourage you to take the time to learn about each of the candidates:

Each of these Comrades brings something valuable to the conversation. I respect their service, their leadership, and their willingness to step forward at this critical time.

Your Role in This Election

This election is about more than any one candidate. It is about the membership deciding the direction of the VFW. That is why I encourage you to:

  • Read about each candidate’s background and vision

  • Reflect on what you believe will best serve the future of the VFW

  • Submit your questions for the upcoming Town Hall in Idaho: Submit Questions Here

Your voice matters. Your questions matter. And your vote matters.

Moving Forward Together

At the end of the day, no matter who you choose, we are all Comrades working toward the same mission: serving veterans, their families, and our communities. I believe that when we approach this process with respect and honesty, the VFW becomes stronger.

I am grateful to be running alongside such dedicated leaders, and I am even more grateful to be running for all of you. Together, we will continue to honor our traditions while building a future where the VFW remains a strong, united voice for every generation of veterans.
